His upcoming trip to Ghana includes a visit to the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Law School.
The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Asad Ahmad Khan KC, is set to visit Ghana in October 2024, as confirmed by his office.
Since taking office on June 16, 2021, Khan has traveled to various countries, including Venezuela, Ukraine, and the United States.
His upcoming trip to Ghana includes a visit to the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Law School.
This visit stems from a discussion with Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, the Dean of GIMPA Law School and head of the African Centre of International Criminal Justice (ACICJ).
While in Ghana, Khan will deliver the keynote address at the 2024 ACICJ Annual Eminent Public Lecture in International Criminal Justice, to be held at GIMPA in Accra. He will also engage with students from GIMPA's Master of Laws (LL.M) program in International Criminal Law and Justice during a special Q&A session.
Earlier in 2024, GIMPA, through the ACICJ, organized a summer school on international criminal law in The Netherlands.
Students participating in the program, including LL.M and selected Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) students, spent time at the ICC from July 16 to July 18, 2024.
During their visit, they attended lectures and engaged with ICC officials on various topics, including the judicial process and the roles of different divisions. The group also had the opportunity to meet Judge Solome Balungi Bossa and observe a court hearing in the case of Prosecutor v. Mahamat Said Abdel Kani.
Karim Khan, a seasoned expert in public international law, international criminal law, and human rights law, served as a Senior Crown Prosecutor and worked with the UN International Criminal Tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda before his current role.
In 2018, he was appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to lead the UN Investigative Team on ISIL crimes (UNITAD). Khan assumed his position as Chief Prosecutor of the ICC on June 16, 2021, for a nine-year term.
In 2019, the ICC and ACICJ signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost cooperation in tackling impunity in Africa.
This partnership has played a crucial role in developing the LL.M in International Criminal Law and Justice program at GIMPA, creating opportunities for students to engage with the ICC through internships and professional programs.
