In a bid to enhance the welfare of inmates during Ramadan, Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has facilitated the donation of essential food items to the Ghana Prisons Service Headquarters.

The contribution, made on behalf of businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama, includes 1,000 bags of rice, 417 boxes of sunflower cooking oil, 200 boxes of tomato paste, and 200 boxes of canned mackerel.

Speaking at the presentation, Mr. Muntaka highlighted his commitment to strengthening the prison service, noting that he reached out to Mr. Mahama to secure support for inmates during the holy month. He also announced that the Interior Ministry would soon distribute 50 pick-up vehicles across various security institutions, with 15 earmarked for the Prisons Service.

Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq), expressed gratitude for the minister’s continued support. She underscored the need for improved conditions for prison officers, urging the restoration of operational allowances and the implementation of a contagious allowance for all personnel.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie also shared plans for strategic reforms aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reputation of the Prisons Service. She reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to working closely with the Interior Ministry to achieve these goals.

The donated food items will be distributed to key prison facilities, including Nsawam Medium Security, the Ankaful Complex, Koforidua Local, Tamale Central, Sunyani Central, Amanfrom Camp, and Manhyia Local Prisons.
