Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo has voiced deep concerns about the improper handling of land dispute cases by certain Judicial Service staff, accusing them of using the system for personal benefit.
She highlighted that some court officials have been tampering with land documents to favor particular individuals in return for bribes, thus compromising the judiciary’s credibility.
Justice Torkornoo made these comments during a meeting with Judicial Service personnel in Cape Coast, held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Judicial Service Staff Association.
Calling for swift action to address these unethical behaviors, she urged the staff to maintain higher standards of public service and to work towards reversing the public’s negative view of corruption within the judiciary.
The Chief Justice also expressed alarm over the growing involvement of some court employees in additional criminal activities.
She noted that there have been cases where staff members have created fraudulent divorce papers and fake letters of administration, which are then used to drain the accounts of deceased persons, depriving rightful heirs of their inheritance.
These illegal actions, Justice Torkornoo added, contribute significantly to delays in the justice system, causing undue stress and frustration for those seeking legal resolution.
She stressed that such misconduct must be rooted out to restore public confidence in the judiciary and enhance its overall effectiveness.
The Chief Justice issued a firm warning to those involved in these corrupt practices, demanding they cease immediately. She pledged to take decisive steps to ensure that individuals engaging in such wrongdoing would face serious consequences as part of broader efforts to reform the judiciary.
