The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has condemned a violent attack on the Kwame Danso District Court, warning that growing assaults on the justice system pose a serious threat to the rule of law.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 12 December, the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) said it was deeply alarmed by the incident, in which unidentified attackers allegedly stormed the court, vandalised property and disrupted proceedings.
JUSAG branded the assault “barbaric, unacceptable, and a serious threat to the administration of justice”, and said the frequency of such incidents was putting both justice delivery and the lives of court staff at risk.
The association stressed that the judiciary is a core pillar of Ghana’s democracy and must be protected from intimidation and violence.
“The attack on the Kwame Danso Court is not just an attack on a building — it is an attack on the justice system of Ghana,” the statement said. It was signed by JUSAG National President and Chairman of the National Executive Council, Samuel Afotey Otu.
JUSAG has called on the Ghana Police Service to launch a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted without delay.
The union is also urging government to scale up security at courts nationwide, arguing that judges, staff and users of the courts must be able to work in a safe, secure environment.
It cautioned that if such attacks continue without accountability or remedial action, the association may have to advise its members to withdraw their services in jurisdictions deemed unsafe.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, JUSAG appealed to civil society groups, the media and the wider public to stand with the judiciary and help safeguard the integrity and sanctity of Ghana’s courts.
