President John Mahama is expected to formally swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s Chief Justice today, following strong parliamentary backing for his nomination last week.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served as Acting Chief Justice since 22 April 2025, steps into the role after the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The President nominated him on 23 September 2025, citing his long judicial career spanning the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, and more than three decades on the Bench.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on 10 November, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie promised collaborative leadership and reaffirmed his commitment to protecting judicial independence and widening public access to the courts.
Parliamentary Approval
His confirmation followed two days later. On 13 November, Parliament voted 163 to 69 in favour of his appointment, clearing the path for today’s ceremony at the presidency.
The swearing-in now completes the transition at the top of Ghana’s judiciary, marking a significant shift after months of institutional turbulence.
