The Keta Divisional Police Command in the Volta Region has incinerated 24 maxim bags filled with suspected cannabis at Adzido, as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug-related activities in the area.
The suspected narcotics were initially seized on December 29, 2023, after officers received a tip-off leading to their discovery at the Adzido beach.
Speaking during an interview, Chief Superintendent Maxwell Agyemang, the Keta Divisional Police Commander, revealed that although the cannabis was confiscated, the individuals responsible managed to evade arrest.
Following extensive investigations across the Keta Municipality, authorities have yet to identify or prosecute anyone connected to the illegal haul. According to Superintendent Agyemang, each of the 24 bags contained approximately 30 parcels, with each parcel valued at around GH₵500, amounting to an estimated total of GH₵360,000.
He also recalled a similar operation conducted on September 27, 2024, when police intercepted 78 bags of marijuana at the same location, again acting on credible intelligence.
Superintendent Agyemang emphasized the Command’s commitment to curbing drug abuse in the municipality. He disclosed that discussions have been held with the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Wisdom Seade, to launch a community-wide sensitization campaign aimed at educating the public, particularly the youth, on the dangers of drug addiction.
Recent findings, he added, show a disturbing rise in substance abuse among Junior and Senior High School students, involving drugs such as tramadol, cannabis, and other illicit substances, endangering their future prospects.
Superintendent Agyemang reiterated the Command’s resolve to intensify surveillance and enforcement activities, calling on residents to support efforts by reporting any suspicious drug-related activities that could threaten the safety of their communities.
Also present during the destruction exercise was Madam Elaina Annor-Agyapong, the Senior Narcotic Drugs Control Officer at Aflao. She warned of the devastating effects of narcotic use, including severe health issues, mental disorders, incarceration, and even death. She urged young people to steer clear of unprescribed drugs to secure a healthier, more promising future.
