A High Court in Koforidua has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the declared winner of the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the Eastern Region, after finding him guilty of contempt of court.
The court's decision follows Kumi's failure to appear before the judge, despite being summoned.
His conviction stems from his disregard of an interim injunction issued on January 7, which barred him from being sworn in and assuming the role of Member of Parliament for Akwatia due to an ongoing legal dispute concerning his election victory.
However, on the same day, Mr. Kumi proceeded to Parliament and took the oath of office.
Presiding over the case, Justice Senyo Amedahe emphasized that the MP-elect continuously failed to appear in person throughout the contempt proceedings.
The judge also dismissed a letter from the parliamentary minority caucus, which cited his legislative responsibilities as the reason for his absence. Justice Amedahe maintained that accepting the letter would contradict his earlier ruling on the matter.
