Lawyer Richard Akpokavie a former national hockey team captain, has been elected president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) following a commanding victory in the Committee's latest election. Akpokavie secured 44 votes to defeat his opponent, Michael Aggrey, who received 19 votes.

The election result marks a significant comeback for Akpokavie, who had previously contested the presidency in 2021 but lost to then-incumbent Ben Nunoo Mensah by just seven votes. His election on Saturday reflects renewed confidence in his leadership within Ghana’s sports community.

Akpokavie’s deep experience in sports administration is well documented. He served as General Secretary of the GOC from 2017 to 2021, during which time he was instrumental in the Committee's operations and strategic planning. His background as a practicing lawyer is also seen as an asset, bringing a blend of legal expertise and sports leadership to his new role.

Beyond administration, Akpokavie has firsthand experience as an elite athlete. As the former captain of Ghana's national hockey team, he brings insights from both the playing field and the boardroom, which many observers believe will aid in advancing the GOC's mission during his tenure.

Under Akpokavie's leadership, the GOC will be tasked with preparing Ghanaian athletes for upcoming international competitions and strengthening the country's presence in the global Olympic movement. His combination of legal acumen, sports experience, and administrative background is expected to shape the Committee’s direction in the coming years.
