The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has officially authorised members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to abstain from court proceedings on Monday, June 30, 2025, in honour of this year’s Martyrs’ Day.

In a circular issued on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, to all judges and magistrates nationwide, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie reaffirmed the long-standing tradition of permitting legal practitioners to withdraw their services in order to participate in the solemn national remembrance of slain judges.

“In conformity with tradition, approval has been granted for members of the Ghana Bar Association to withdraw their services from court appearances on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the directive stated.

Martyrs’ Day is observed annually to honour the memory of three High Court judges — Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong — along with Major Sam Acquah (Rtd.), who were abducted and brutally murdered on June 30, 1982, during a turbulent period in Ghana’s history.

The circular, which was copied to key judicial officers including the Acting Judicial Secretary, Court Manager of the Law Court Complex, Supervising High Court Judges, and all Registrars, is aimed at ensuring full coordination and compliance with the directive.

The observance serves as a moment of national reflection on justice, accountability, and the sacrifices made in defence of the rule of law.
