As part of its ongoing commitment to education, the Lebanese Community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to twelve outstanding law students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to foster educational collaboration between Lebanon and Ghana while supporting academic excellence.

At the scholarship presentation ceremony, Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Maher Kheir, handed over a cheque to the beneficiaries. He highlighted Lebanon’s long-standing legal heritage in the Middle East as a key motivation for supporting law students in Ghana.

The event was attended by prominent figures including the Provost of the College of Humanities, the Director of Public Affairs, the Dean of the Law Faculty, senior faculty members, and representatives from the Lebanese Community, including Mr. Naaman Ashkar.

Ambassador's Address

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Kheir underscored the significance of law in shaping societies and promoting justice.

He encouraged the scholarship recipients to approach their studies with dedication, emphasizing that the legal profession carries immense responsibility.

Ambassador Kheir also highlighted Lebanon’s influential role in legal education, recalling that Beirut was home to the first law faculty in the Middle East. He reaffirmed the Lebanese Community’s commitment to supporting Ghanaian students in their pursuit of excellence.

University Leadership’s Perspective

Professor Joseph Yaro, Provost of the College of Humanities, commended the Lebanese Community for its continued dedication to supporting education.

He emphasized that partnerships like this enrich the educational experience and urged other organizations to consider similar contributions to student support.

Professor Yaro encouraged the beneficiaries to view the scholarship as a stepping stone toward greater achievements.

Call for Expansion

Professor Raymond Atuguba, Dean of the Faculty of Law, expressed gratitude for the Lebanese Community’s nearly two decades of support. However, he appealed for an expansion of the scholarship to cover more students and additional educational expenses.

“We appreciate this generous support, but we also recognize the growing financial challenges students face. Expanding this initiative would greatly enhance the learning experience,” he stated.

Student and Community Representative Remarks

One of the scholarship recipients, Nahum Agyapong, conveyed his appreciation on behalf of his peers, acknowledging how the financial assistance had alleviated the burden on their families.

Representing the Lebanese Community, Mr. Naaman Ashkar reaffirmed their dedication to empowering Ghanaian students. He noted that the scholarship program extends beyond law, benefiting students in disciplines such as public relations, translation, and film studies at institutions including the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and the University of Ghana.

Over the past decade, more than 500 students have benefitted from the initiative, underscoring the Lebanese Community’s long-standing commitment to educational development in Ghana.
