The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has revealed that a significant portion of billboards across the country—over 60%—have been installed without proper authorization, with their ownership often remaining unidentified.

This revelation comes amidst a growing concern over the placement of billboards and signposts in unsuitable locations, including pedestrian pathways, highway medians, and road intersections, all of which pose potential risks to public safety.

In an interview with Citi News, AAG President Andrews Ackah voiced serious concerns about the issue, stating that many of these structures bypass established legal procedures.

He stressed the urgent need for regulation to avoid future dangers, saying the current situation reflects poorly on public accountability.

Ackah also drew attention to the visual chaos in Accra, where billboards are placed without order, leading to clutter and fierce competition among advertisers.

“This problem worsens during election seasons,” he added. “We see a surge in billboard installations, often enabled by political connections, with structures popping up indiscriminately—even on road medians.”

He called for stricter enforcement of billboard regulations to restore order and ensure public safety.
