The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Baffour Awuah, has called on Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to remain resolute in the face of a petition seeking her dismissal from office.
Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, March 29, the MP encouraged the Chief Justice to resist any pressure to step down and instead defend her position, highlighting the significance of her constitutional oath.
His comments come in the wake of increasing public and political discourse surrounding the petition, which accuses the Chief Justice of misconduct and abuse of power.
Appointed under former President Akufo-Addo’s administration, Chief Justice Torkornoo now faces the possibility of removal after three individuals submitted a petition to President Mahama calling for her dismissal.
President Mahama has since given the Chief Justice a 10-day window to file an initial response. In return, she has requested that the Presidency furnish her with relevant details concerning the allegations to aid her defense.
As constitutionally required, the petition has been referred to the Council of State under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution for further consultation.
