A 30-year-old mine worker, Atta Kwadwo, has been handed a 14-year prison sentence by the Bekwai Circuit Court after being found guilty of defiling an eight-year-old girl at Manso Kumpese in the Ashanti Region.
The court, presided over by His Honour Isaac Appiatu, convicted Kwadwo of defilement, contrary to Section 101 of the Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29), as amended by Section 11 of Act 554.
The conviction followed a complaint lodged with the Police after the victim's mother reportedly caught the convict sexually assaulting her daughter.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on July 10, 2026, at approximately 6 p.m., when Kwadwo, who lived in the same compound as the victim's family, approached the child near a bathhouse.
The girl's mother became concerned after noticing that her daughter had remained in the bathroom for an unusually long period.
She subsequently went to check on the child and reportedly discovered Kwadwo sexually assaulting her.
The mother immediately raised an alarm, attracting the attention of her husband, who rushed to the scene.
Following the incident, Kwadwo was apprehended and handed over to officers at the Adubia Police Station for investigation.
The victim was subsequently taken to St. Martin's Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum for medical examination.
The examination reportedly revealed injuries, including mild bleeding and lacerations, which formed part of the evidence gathered during investigations.
Although Kwadwo denied committing the offence in his caution statement to the Police, he was subsequently charged and brought before the Bekwai Circuit Court.
After considering the prosecution's evidence, the court found him guilty of defilement and sentenced him to 14 years' imprisonment.
