The Minerals Commission, under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has consulted the Bono Regional House of Chiefs as part of a nationwide review of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and the 2014 Minerals and Mining Policy.

The meeting in Sunyani, the 13th in the series, gathered paramount chiefs, queen mothers, and traditional leaders to discuss proposed reforms aimed at aligning Ghana’s mining laws with global standards, addressing environmental concerns, and enhancing community participation in resource governance.

Key issues raised included the share of gold revenue allocated to traditional authorities, access to Minerals Commission offices by mining communities, and procedures for acquiring mining leases.

The Omanhene of Wenchi, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako, criticized the granting of mining leases without chiefs’ consent, warning that such practices undermine traditional authority and risk sparking disputes.

Benjamin Aryee, leader of the review team, acknowledged past gaps in engagement with chiefs and pledged improved consultation before licence approvals. He said evolving mining technology, the climate agenda, and the emergence of transition minerals like lithium made legal updates essential.

The review process will also gather input from mining communities, industry stakeholders, civil society, and policymakers. The Commission hopes the amended framework will foster a transparent, inclusive, and accountable mining sector that benefits both the nation and local communities.
