Afenyo-Markin strongly criticized the move, calling it an abuse of power. "The attempt to arrest Ernest Yaw Kumi is a clear case of collusion between the government and the judiciary."
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged a coordinated effort between the government and the Koforidua High Court to intimidate Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, following his conviction for contempt.
Kumi was found guilty after defying a court injunction that barred him from participating in the swearing-in ceremony. In response, the Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, prompting National Security operatives to take action.
Afenyo-Markin strongly criticized the move, calling it an abuse of power. "The attempt to arrest Ernest Yaw Kumi is a clear case of collusion between the government and the judiciary. It is unacceptable that the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, is defending the actions of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) in this matter," he stated.
Defending the security intervention, Minister Mubarak insisted that the operatives were simply enforcing the law. However, Afenyo-Markin countered, asserting that the legal process was bypassed.
The Minority Leader expressed alarm over the continued pursuit of Kumi by state security forces even after the Supreme Court's ruling.
Afenyo-Markin described how security personnel, armed with weapons, attempted to coerce Kumi into their vehicle.
He vowed to challenge what he perceived as an unjust collaboration between the judiciary and the government.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to pursuing justice, stating that his team would explore all legal avenues to protect the integrity of the law and defend Kumi’s rights.
