This move follows the MMDAs' failure to comply with a 21-day ultimatum issued by the NRSA in April, which directed all assemblies to remove billboards and posters unlawfully installed within road medians and other high-risk areas.
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has announced its intention to take legal action against Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region over the continued presence of unauthorized billboards along major roads.
This move follows the MMDAs' failure to comply with a 21-day ultimatum issued by the NRSA in April, which directed all assemblies to remove billboards and posters unlawfully installed within road medians and other high-risk areas.
According to the Acting Director-General of the NRSA, Abraham Amaliba, efforts to engage the MMDAs in a follow-up meeting to offer them a grace period for voluntary compliance proved futile, as the assemblies failed to attend the scheduled meeting on Thursday, May 29.
He emphasized that the NRSA would proceed with enforcement, treating the missed meeting as an indication of non-cooperation.
The NRSA has raised concerns about the growing number of unregulated billboards, particularly those positioned on medians and near road intersections, warning that they pose serious hazards by blocking drivers’ line of sight and diverting attention from the road.
Legal proceedings are expected to begin in the coming days, as the Authority seeks to hold the defaulting assemblies accountable under existing road safety regulations.
