The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued a strict directive to all unlicensed mortuaries and funeral facilities—both public and private—to regularise their operations within one week from the date of its notice.
In an official statement, the Agency expressed concern about the persistent operation of several facilities without the required authorisation, describing it as a breach of Section 55 of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829).
According to Act 829, any individual or entity that operates a health-related facility without proper registration or licensing commits an offence and may be subject to:
Monetary fines, and/or
Temporary or permanent closure of the facility.
MoFFA warned that any mortuary or funeral facility that fails to comply within the stipulated one-week period risks immediate shutdown.
The Agency reaffirmed its statutory mandate to license, control, and regulate all establishments responsible for the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains, emphasizing that enforcing compliance is essential to safeguarding public health and maintaining professional standards in the death-care industry.
