“We need a lot more of you to go into the practice of tax; when you look around, you can count the number of firms that specialise in taxation."

The Deputy Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr Philip Jude Mensah has emphasized the need for more lawyers to practice tax law.

While delivering a speech on behalf of the GRA Commissioner-General at the RE-Akoto Memorial lecture, Mr. Philip indicated that the call was necessary because there are a lot of new tax interventions being introduced by the GRA, to which the expertise of lawyers is required.

He said the GRA would introduce electronic VAT, e-commerce, and online filing of taxes, signaling that the practice of tax law holds potential for student lawyers, and urged them to assist the tax administration to deliver its mandate effectively.

“We need a lot more of you to go into the practice of tax; when you look around, you can count the number of firms that specialise in taxation.

That will help the tax administration to deliver its mandate effectively and also ensure that all taxpayers are given a fair deal when it comes to their engagement with the tax authority,” he added,” he explained.

The lecture was on the theme: “Constitutionalism: The case of Ghana.” It formed part of the launch of the 62nd Law Week of the Ghana School of Law.

A Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi JSC, who was the keynote speaker at the event, intimated the need for constitutionalism to be beneficial to ordinary people in society.
