The Divisional Executive Council (DEC) of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) branch of the Public Services Workers Union of TUC (Ghana) has set Wednesday, September 18 to commence an indefinite strike action.
They attribute their decision to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission's (FWSC) failure to resume negotiations following the union's seven-day ultimatum during their last meeting.
A statement signed by Divisional Chairperson Rebecca Colecraft explained that in May 2023, the union submitted proposals to the FWSC to negotiate allowances for NCCE staff.
Despite numerous reminders, the FWSC failed to engage in negotiations.
"The rules for the negotiation were discussed on May 6, 2024, and the union’s request for a specific timeline to complete the talks was rejected. It wasn’t until July 23 that the FWSC reconvened for discussions," the statement said.
At the most recent meeting on September 4, 2024, the union realized that the FWSC was not negotiating in good faith and was deliberately delaying the process.
The statement further emphasized that the prolonged negotiations, combined with FWSC's actions, have exacerbated the difficulties faced by NCCE staff.
