In a statement released on Sunday, 16 November 2025, the NIA said it was “deeply concerned” not only about the accusations but also about the behaviour of the individual involved.

Ghana’s National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed allegations circulating on social media that its officers at the Bono Premium Centre had extorted money from applicants.

The claims were made in a viral TikTok video posted by a user calling himself “Sefwi Biggest Trapper.” In the footage, he accuses staff at the centre of demanding illegal payments during his visit on 11 November.

In a statement released on Sunday, 16 November 2025, the NIA said it was “deeply concerned” not only about the accusations but also about the behaviour of the individual involved.

According to the Authority, the man’s conduct at the centre was “unruly, disorderly, and posed safety risks” to others seeking services on the day.

The Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, reaffirmed the NIA’s strict zero-tolerance stance on bribery, extortion and staff misconduct.

The NIA said attempts to reach the TikTok user and his companion, identified as Appiah Comfort, have so far been unsuccessful. The matter has now been handed over to the Authority’s Internal CID for what it describes as a full and independent investigation.

Management has also begun implementing strengthened security protocols across all NIA centres to safeguard staff and applicants.

The Authority urged the accuser to provide any evidence he may have, stressing that officers found culpable would face disciplinary sanctions and possible prosecution.

The NIA also clarified its official fees in light of the public conversation sparked by the video:

Premium Centres:

First-time registration: GH¢310

Update of personal information: GH¢355

Replacement of lost or damaged cards: GH¢420

District Offices:

First-time registration: Free

Update of personal information: GH¢60

Card replacement: GH¢125

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the NIA encouraged citizens to report legitimate concerns via its official phone lines or through info@nia.gov.gh.
