The accused was said to have had in possession a valid Ghanaian Birth Certificate

A Nigerian man has been fined GHC 3000 by the Asokore Mampong District Magistrate Court for falsely presenting himself as Ghanaian to acquire a Ghana Card.

He was charged with the offense of falsely providing information about himself, contrary to section 17 (c) of the National Identification Authority Act 707 (Act 2006).

In default of payment, he may serve a prison term of six months.

According to a statement from the National Identification Authority (NIA), the accused, Emmanuel Usman had in possession a Ghanaian Birth certificate which granted him eleigible status to register for the card.

“Having gone through the registration process, Emmanuel Usman was left to be issued with the Ghana Card. It was at this point that the Regional Registration Officer (RRO) of NIA in Ashanti Region suspected the applicant was not Ghanaian,” the NIA statement explained.

“The RRO quickly handed him over to the Police CID in Adum, Kumasi for further investigation. The investigation established that despite being in possession of a valid Ghanaian Birth Certificate, Emmanuel Usman was not a Ghanaian.”
