The chiefs and residents of the Nkonya Traditional Area in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region have urged the government to lift the long-standing curfew imposed on them and the neighboring Alavanyo Traditional Area.
This appeal comes after seven years of sustained peace and stability in both communities.
In recent years, the residents of these areas have shifted their focus to participating in government initiatives like Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development, and Rearing for Food and Jobs. These programs aim to improve living standards and foster economic growth within their communities.
Speaking during the 60th-anniversary celebration of Nkonya Senior High School (NKOSEC), Clemence Gyato, a National Peace Ambassador and native of Nkonya, emphasized the need to lift the curfew. According to him, the continued enforcement of the curfew perpetuates the false perception of the ongoing conflict between the two areas, negatively impacting enrollment at NKOSEC and deterring investments in both human and natural resources.
Gyato explained that despite the school’s capacity to accommodate more students, enrollment numbers remain low due to the curfew. He called on the government to reassess the situation and allow residents to return to their daily activities without restrictions.
Godwin Owusu, Assembly Member for the Nkonya Ahenkro Electoral Area, added his voice to the call for change, urging the removal of a road barrier between Hohoe and Nkonya-Ntsumuru via Alavanyo. He explained that the barrier disrupts access to the nearest market in Hohoe, forcing local farmers to sell their produce at reduced prices to the few traders who can navigate the route.
The Paramount Chief of the Nkonya Ahenkro Traditional Area, Nana Okoto Kwame Tegyi II, reaffirmed his dedication to fostering collaboration between the two traditional areas. He assured that the painful events of the past, which had jeopardized peace and hindered progress, would not be repeated.
