Former Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahiru Hammond has suffered a legal setback after the High Court in Obuasi struck out his petition challenging the parliamentary victory of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani in Adansi Asokwa.
Justice Kwabena Twumasi, who presided over the case on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, dismissed the petition and imposed a ¢60,000 fine on Hammond, describing his actions as a waste of the court’s time.
Hammond, who lost his seat in the December 2024 general elections after over two decades as MP, was narrowly defeated by Dorani.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate secured 14,229 votes, while Hammond, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 13,275—a margin of 954 votes.
Dissatisfied with the result, Hammond filed his petition on January 15, 2025, alleging irregularities. But his repeated absence from proceedings—missing three consecutive court sittings—prompted the judge to dismiss the case and rule in favour of Dorani.
Reacting to the decision, Dorani’s lawyer, Richard Andy, said the petition had no legal merit from the start. He added that the judgment clears the path for the MP to focus fully on serving the people of Adansi Asokwa.
