More than 150 people, mostly young men, have been arrested in a joint police and military operation conducted early Wednesday morning in the Ahafo Region.
The coordinated operation was carried out simultaneously in Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District and Hwediem in the Asutifi South District, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in the area.
Security sources confirmed that the suspects have been transferred to the Police Headquarters in Accra for further interrogation and profiling.
While officials have yet to issue a formal statement, the operation follows heightened security alerts triggered by recent violent confrontations between anti-illegal mining officers and local youth at Bronikrom.
Residents reported the presence of heavily armed military and police personnel conducting dawn raids, searching homes and screening residents as part of the intelligence-led exercise.
Local authorities said the operation was intended to restore calm and prevent further disturbances, particularly in communities affected by illegal mining activities and growing youth unrest.
Sources indicate that the exercise forms part of a broader national security strategy to stabilise mining zones and protect personnel from violent attacks.
The Ahafo Region, a key mining hub, has seen a recent surge in illegal mining-related violence, prompting the government to increase joint police–military deployments across affected districts.
Officials are expected to provide more details in an official briefing later this week.
