A painter working on the Bank of Ghana building at Ridge, Accra, has been remanded into police custody for allegedly stealing copper cables worth GH¢1,035,500.

Ahmed Mohammed Lawal was identified as a suspect after a review of CCTV footage and was subsequently arrested. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft. Two other accomplices remain at large, and police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.

At an Accra Circuit Court hearing, presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam, the case was adjourned to March 19, 2025.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustin Kingsley Oppong, who led the prosecution, the complainants—Samuel Nii Tettey, a safety officer, and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, an electrical engineer—discovered the theft at the construction site’s Energy Farm on February 16, 2025. The stolen items included LC x 240 and LC x 300 square copper cables.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, the accused and his accomplices were seen cutting and removing the cables. Lawal was later apprehended by the complainants and handed over to the police.

Investigations revealed that the suspects gained access to the Energy Farm using scaffolding and used sharp objects to cut the cables before making away with them. Further inquiries indicated that the stolen cables were sold at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, with Lawal reportedly receiving GH¢2,000 as his share. However, he was unable to assist authorities in locating his accomplices or the buyer of the stolen goods.

The police continue to investigate the case.
