Retired Supreme Court Justice and Board Chairman of CUTS International, Justice Dotse, has urged the government to expedite the passage of the long-awaited Consumer Protection Bill into law within the year.
Speaking at the World Consumer Rights Day event and the launch of the State of the Ghanaian Consumer Report 2025 in Accra on Wednesday, March 19, he underscored the critical role of consumer rights in ensuring justice and fairness across society.
“As a retired Supreme Court judge, I have dedicated my career to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of Ghanaians. Today, I recognize consumer rights as an extension of that mission—an essential pillar of justice that affects every household, business, and community,” Justice Dotse remarked.
He emphasized that society operates on interconnected services, where individuals and institutions depend on one another. Citing examples, he noted that even high-ranking officials, such as the Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, rely on telecom services for internet access, while CEOs of major corporations depend on public utilities like water and roads.
Justice Dotse described the absence of a comprehensive consumer protection law as a significant gap in Ghana’s legal system. He argued that the bill would establish a clear framework for protecting consumer rights, addressing regulatory shortcomings, and empowering citizens to demand accountability from service providers.
His call reinforces ongoing advocacy efforts for stronger consumer protections, ensuring fair treatment, transparency, and accountability in the marketplace.
