The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested Abubakar Sadick, a fugitive convict linked to a nationwide car robbery syndicate that targeted vehicle rental services under false pretenses.
Abubakar and his gang reportedly posed as officials from NGOs or religious organizations, approaching car rental companies to hire vehicles for supposed outreach missions in northern Ghana. Once the vehicles were secured, they would lure drivers to remote locations, tie them up, and steal the cars.
One such case involved a Toyota Land Cruiser, where the driver was bound to a tree near Malzeri, close to Yendi. A nearly identical incident occurred in January 2023, and another car—a Toyota Vitz—was stolen and sold in Bolgatanga a few months later.
CID boss COP Lydia Yaako Donkor revealed at a joint press conference with the Cyber Security Authority on Monday that Abubakar had been on the police radar since 2022 and was placed on an Interpol red notice, immigration stop list, and national wanted list.
Although Burkina Faso authorities briefly detained him in early 2023, he escaped before extradition could occur.
His luck ran out on July 28, 2025, when he was finally captured in Accra through a coordinated operation between the CID’s Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and National Security.
Abubakar had already been sentenced in absentia by the Cape Coast High Court to 25 years in prison for a 2021 robbery in Breman Asikuma. He is now in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations into multiple car thefts believed to involve him and other suspects still at large.
The police are urging car rental companies and anyone affected by similar crimes to report to the CID Headquarters to support the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Cyber Security Authority, Divine Selase Agbeti, emphasized that the inter-agency cooperation reflects Ghana’s commitment to national and digital security.
