The matter came to light after a special task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly moved into the area to demolish illegal structures along the Subin stream, behind the COCOBOD building in Adum.

A police officer in the Ashanti Region has come under investigation after he was allegedly linked to illegal structures rented out to commercial sex workers at Asafo BB in Kumasi.

The officer, a Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police Service, is alleged to have owned some of the unauthorised structures in the enclave.

His name has not been disclosed.

The matter came to light after a special task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly moved into the area to demolish illegal structures along the Subin stream, behind the COCOBOD building in Adum.

The demolition exercise was, however, disrupted after squatters allegedly attacked the team.

The task force, made up of soldiers and city guards, was reportedly pelted with stones and clubs.

Two pickup trucks and an excavator being used for the demolition were also damaged.

The windscreens of the vehicles were smashed and their tyres deflated.

Three members of the task force, including a soldier, sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Speaking on Luv FM, the Head of Physical Planning at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Benjamin Agyenim-Boateng, said the police officer is alleged to have owned about 12 shacks in the area.

Police say they are deeply concerned about the allegation involving the officer.

The Service has indicated that further developments on the matter will be communicated after investigations.

Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman-Boadi has meanwhile signalled that the Assembly will return for a second phase of the demolition exercise.

He said the next phase will be carried out without prior public notice.

The Assembly is targeting unauthorised structures along the Subin stream as part of efforts to clear illegal developments in the area.
