The office of President Akufo-Addo has refuted claims circulating about a supposed presidential pardon granted to 11 inmates currently serving prison sentences.
Reports initially suggested that the president, in accordance with Article 72(1) of the Constitution, had exercised his prerogative of mercy to release the prisoners just days before the end of his term.
These reports, based on a widely shared document, claimed the decision was made after a detailed review of the prisoners' cases, factoring in health concerns, the duration of their sentences, and other mitigating circumstances.
Prominent names on the alleged list included William Ato Essien, the former CEO of the now-defunct Capital Bank, and Philip Assibit, convicted for his involvement in the GYEEDA scandal.
However, a statement issued by the Communications Directorate of the Jubilee House categorically denied these claims, clarifying that no such pardons have been granted.
