The Law Students’ Union of the University of Ghana School of Law (UGSoL) has honored Professor Raymond Atuguba, the immediate-past dean, for his visionary leadership and immense contributions to the growth and transformation of the faculty.
At a heartfelt dinner and awards ceremony marking the climax of UGSoL’s 50th Law Week celebrations, students, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate Prof. Atuguba’s impactful tenure.
The event featured a moving slideshow of testimonials from teaching and non-teaching staff, along with highlights of his public lectures and legal advocacy.
Prof. Atuguba, who assumed office in 2019, was credited with tripling the faculty size—from 20 to 150 lecturers—and more than tripling the student population from 600 to over 2,000. Under his stewardship, construction began on a $25 million state-of-the-art legal complex, designed to elevate legal education and advance national development.
Incoming Dean Professor Peter Atudiwe Atupare, together with other senior lecturers and students, presented Prof. Atuguba with two portraits in recognition of his leadership. “The students love you, and we, the faculty, also love you for the tremendous job, the infrastructure, and the unity you championed,” Prof. Atupare remarked.
Prof. Kwame Gyan, a member of the committee that appointed Prof. Atuguba, praised his commitment to welfare and professional advancement, noting that his tenure saw unprecedented professorial promotions and a deep focus on innovation and inclusion.
In response, Prof. Atuguba, accompanied by his wife and daughters, expressed deep appreciation and emphasized that the progress made was a collective effort. He encouraged both students and faculty to rally behind the new dean to sustain the momentum.
The event marked a fitting farewell for a leader whose legacy, both structural and cultural, will leave a lasting imprint on legal education at UGSoL.
