The long-simmering clash between two senior University of Ghana academics has formally escalated, following a televised bust-up that went viral over the weekend.
Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer and Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Shippers Authority, has taken initial legal steps against Dr. George Domfeh after accusing him of making a deeply defamatory allegation on national television.
In a notice issued on 16 November 2025, law firm Darko, Keli-Delataa & Company, acting on behalf of Prof. Gyampo, directed Dr. Domfeh to retract the statement and issue an unequivocal apology within 24 hours.
The confrontation stems from their appearance on TV3’s current affairs programme, The Key Point, on 15 November 2025. What began as a contentious policy debate reportedly devolved into personal attacks, with the solicitors describing the exchanges as “acerbic, insulting and downright defamatory.”
The flashpoint was a claim attributed to Dr. Domfeh:
The Allegation: Dr. Domfeh is said to have asserted live on air that Prof. Gyampo “is a Professor who sleeps with under-age girls.”
The Effect: According to the lawyers, the remark was “widely understood” by viewers to mean Prof. Gyampo is a paedophile.
The legal team stressed that the statement was “patently false, reckless and malicious,” arguing that it projected their client as “hideously immoral and irresponsible” with no factual or legal justification.
The notice highlights what it characterises as grave reputational damage, noting Prof. Gyampo’s stature as a public intellectual and senior academic. Given the widespread reach of the programme, his lawyers insist that any retraction and apology must be issued:
On an equally prominent platform,
Hosted by the same media organisation,
With the same visibility as the original allegation.
The letter ends with a decisive escalation trigger: failure to retract and apologise within the stipulated timeframe will prompt Prof. Gyampo to commence full legal proceedings against Dr. Domfeh.
The dispute, already attracting broad public attention, now appears poised to move from the airwaves to the courtroom—unless the demanded remedial steps are taken promptly.
