A former CEO of the Mental Health Authority, Professor Joseph Bediako Asare, has urged the government to introduce a mental health levy to replace the current COVID-19 levy.
He argued that this change would provide essential funding to address the country's urgent mental health needs.
At a mental health forum at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra, Prof. Asare emphasized the critical need for increased funding and attention to mental health issues.
The event, themed ‘Movement: Moving More for Mental Health, What the Graduate Students Need to Know,’ was organized by GIMPA's Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana.
Prof. Asare, however, expressed disappointment over the lack of adequate funding and the slow implementation of the mental health law, noting the growing number of mentally ill individuals on the streets.
He highlighted the importance of early treatment for mental illnesses and called on the public to avoid stigmatizing those affected, as acceptance can significantly improve their sense of worth.
