Through the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR), the Government is overhauling the Labour Department by establishing 16 new Public Employment Centres (PECs).
Supported by the Ghana Jobs and Skills Project (GJSP) and financed by the World Bank, a PEC has been set up in each of Ghana's 16 regions to strengthen skills development and enhance job opportunities across the country.
A key initiative under this project is the Ghana Labour Market Information System (GLMIS), which provides a centralized platform where employers and job seekers can access job listings and information on required skills.
At the opening ceremony for the Konongo-Odumase PEC, Mr Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, acknowledged the Labour Department's challenges in delivering job and skills services to employers and job seekers over the years. He highlighted the importance of adapting to the evolving job market, noting that improving the department's resources would better align it with current workforce demands.
Mr Baffour Awuah explained that, during the project's planning phase, the Ministry identified gaps in the labour market's structure and recognized outdated infrastructure, which hindered the Ministry's ability to efficiently coordinate and deliver employment services.
He shared that the new PECs are intended to empower the Labour Department to offer higher-quality services to employers, job seekers, and educational institutions. These centres allow job seekers to access job openings, post profiles on the GLMIS, and interact directly with employers.
Additionally, job seekers can utilize these centres to explore labour market resources, study industry trends, and gain skills in high-demand areas to enhance their employability in a changing workforce.
The Minister expressed confidence that the PECs would play a significant role in building essential skills, addressing skills mismatches, and lowering unemployment levels.
On his part, the Asante-Akim Central Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Robert Yaw Kwarkye, noted that the PECs illustrate the government’s dedication to reducing unemployment and helping the government monitor unemployment levels within municipalities.
