The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has appealed for calm in Hamile, Upper West Region, following disturbances at the border post on Saturday evening.
The incident arose after some residents accused immigration officers of misconduct and of allowing armed men from Burkina Faso to cross illegally into Ghana. Matters escalated when officers were reportedly seen attempting to repatriate a Burkinabe woman said to be seeking refuge in Ghana.
Angry youth reacted by storming the border post, destroying property and setting fire to a vehicle. The confrontation led to a brief clash between the youth and immigration officers stationed in the Lambussie District.
In a statement signed by the GIS Head of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Michael Amoako Attah, the Service assured the public that “appropriate measures would be taken following the outcome of the investigation.”
By Monday morning, calm had been restored after security agencies intervened.
