A serving soldier with the Ghana Armed Forces has been arrested in the Ashanti Region for allegedly attempting to sell high-powered weapons and ammunition to civilians, police have said.
Warrant Officer Class II David Kofi Brew, of the 4th Battalion of Infantry in Kumasi, was picked up on Tuesday 16 December 2025 at about 14:30 GMT at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station during an intelligence-led operation by the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID).
According to a situational report from the PID, the operation formed part of a broader crackdown on illegal arms supplies believed to be fuelling criminal activity in Obuasi and surrounding communities.
Police say preliminary intelligence suggested the soldier was involved in the illicit distribution of firearms. On 15 December 2025, undercover officers engaged him, during which he reportedly arrived in a military vehicle with registration 54 GA 92 to meet an agent posing as a buyer.
During that meeting, the suspect is said to have claimed he could supply a range of military-grade weapons, including M16 rifles, G3 rifles and pistols, and allegedly quoted GH¢80,000 for a single M16 rifle.
The following day, officers say he contacted the undercover agent again to confirm that the weapons were ready for collection. He was arrested soon after, as he allegedly attempted to hand over the firearms.
At the point of arrest, police recovered:
A TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunition and two 12-round magazines
An Ash Taurus GX2 pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition and three 12-round magazines
During initial interrogation, the Warrant Officer reportedly admitted to having sold firearms to individuals in Obuasi and neighbouring areas.
He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while formal notification procedures are underway to inform his military superiors.
Police say efforts are continuing to identify and arrest any accomplices linked to the suspected arms-trafficking network.
