This initiative is part of the service's broader efforts to enhance public safety and ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process as Ghanaians prepare to choose their next leaders for the following four years.
Hotline for Electoral Safety
The toll-free number is a preventive strategy to address potential security concerns in areas identified as election flashpoints, where tensions may escalate. In a statement shared on social media, the Police Service underscored its commitment to peace, encouraging the public to act together:
"Suspicious Activity? Let’s Act Together! Dial 0800311311 to alert us and protect all. Your report matters for a peaceful Election 2024."
Supporting Media Safety
In addition to election security, the Police Administration has announced specific measures to safeguard journalists covering the elections. These include assigning two plainclothes officers to media houses across the country, providing a direct communication channel for journalists, and establishing a National Security Taskforce Press Briefing Centre.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare emphasized the significance of media safety during a meeting with media editors at the Police Headquarters in Accra. He acknowledged the crucial role of journalists in democratic processes and assured them of a secure environment to carry out their duties.
Media Collaboration Facilities
The Press Briefing Centre, which can accommodate up to 100 journalists, will remain operational 24/7, offering a space for reporters to relax and access timely updates from the police. Dr. Dampare reaffirmed the Police Service's dedication to maintaining a supportive environment for journalists, saying:
"We are concerned about your safety and want to ensure you can work without fear."
Combating Misinformation
The IGP also highlighted the critical need to counter misinformation during the election period. He urged journalists to verify information rigorously before publishing, noting:
"Let’s take our time and cross-check with relevant authorities. This approach can prevent unnecessary harm and save lives."
Dr. Dampare further explained that accurate reporting would deter the spread of false claims, as individuals would understand that the media prioritizes truth and accountability.
Strengthening Stakeholder Collaboration
The IGP expressed gratitude to the media and other stakeholders for their ongoing support in maintaining peace and stability during the elections. He described the partnership as integral to Ghana's democratic success:
"The media’s role is indispensable. Without your contribution, our democratic process would not achieve the recognition it deserves. We value and respect your efforts immensely."
These comprehensive measures reflect a united effort to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process, bolstering confidence in Ghana’s democracy.
