The University of Cape Coast’s Faculty of Law has held its 12th Roll Call ceremony, formally welcoming new first- and second-year law students.

The event, hosted at the School of Graduate Studies Auditorium, not only marked the beginning of their legal education but also recognized students who have demonstrated academic excellence.

Oath Administration and Keynote Address

His Lordship Justice John-Mark Nuku Alifo—a High Court judge in the Central Region—administered the oath to the new inductees. The ceremony’s keynote address was delivered by Dr. Ernest Yaw Ako, Esq., Acting Head of the Department of Legal Studies. Dr. Ako focused on the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on both education and legal practice. He encouraged the students to embrace technology by stating, “Now is the time to immerse yourself in learning and tap into the power of AI,” highlighting how modern advancements are reshaping the field.

Dr. Ako further urged students to explore AI’s potential, advising them to “seize every opportunity to understand how AI can enhance your studies.” He also called on academic institutions, including UCC, to establish policies that foster responsible AI usage rather than penalizing its integration into learning. His remarks underscored the importance of balancing technological progress with a deep understanding of its mechanisms and limitations.

A Call for Growth and Preparedness

Chairing the event, UCC’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, expressed enthusiasm over the growing interest in legal studies. He noted that the rising number of applicants signals a need for the expansion of both infrastructure and faculty to better serve the student community. Professor Aheto emphasized that while the study of law is both challenging and rewarding, it demands mental readiness. He advised the new students to carefully consider their motivations for entering the legal field, seek mentorship, and build supportive networks. “Examine your reasons for choosing law, consult with mentors, and lean on each other when challenges arise,” he remarked.

Encouragement for Academic Success

Concluding the ceremony, the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Elijah Tukwariba Yin, congratulated the newly inducted students. He encouraged them to approach their studies with seriousness and to support one another as they navigate the demanding journey of legal education.
