The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has defended its decision to swear in Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor as the new vice-chancellor, despite reports of an ongoing legal dispute aimed at halting the process.
In a statement addressing concerns raised by Chancellor Dr. K.K. Sarpong, the UPSA Registrar clarified that the university had not received any formal notice or legal documentation regarding the alleged court case or injunction against the investiture.
The issue arose following claims that an individual had filed a lawsuit questioning Prof. Mawutor’s qualifications for the position. Reports indicated that a request for an injunction had been filed to delay the ceremony.
Addressing these concerns, the Registrar emphasized, “Let me make it clear that the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has not been formally served with any writ, legal notice, or application for an interlocutory injunction.”
The statement further noted that the university's legal counsel had advised during a Council meeting that media reports alone, without an official court directive, could not justify stopping the event.
The investiture proceeded as scheduled, in compliance with the UPSA Act 850, with the Deputy Minister of Education officiating the oath-taking ceremony on behalf of the President.
Prof. Mawutor’s appointment marks a new chapter for the institution, though the legal concerns remain a point of interest.
