In a notice issued by the Academic Affairs Directorate on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the university explained that the directive was in accordance with Section 9.26 of the University Regulations for Junior Members (2017).
The University of Ghana (UG) has directed undergraduate students who recorded a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.00 at the end of the 2025/2026 academic year to withdraw from their respective programmes.
The university says students who fail to meet the minimum academic requirement will not be allowed to progress to the next level, as its regulations do not provide for academic probation.
In a notice issued by the Academic Affairs Directorate on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the university explained that the directive was in accordance with Section 9.26 of the University Regulations for Junior Members (2017).
Under the regulation, undergraduate students are required to maintain a minimum CGPA of 1.00 and satisfy any additional academic requirements prescribed by their respective schools or departments.
The Directorate clarified that students whose CGPAs remain below 1.00 after all their registered course results have been released must withdraw from their programmes.
No opportunity for academic probation
The university further explained that its regulations do not permit students who fall below the required academic standard to remain enrolled on probation.
This means that affected students cannot continue to the next academic level on the understanding that they will improve their grades in subsequent semesters.
However, the withdrawal requirement applies only after all grades for the academic year have been released and the student's final CGPA has been determined.
How affected students can withdraw
The Academic Affairs Directorate has advised students to check their academic records through the university's Management Information System (MIS) Web to confirm their academic standing.
Students who fall within the withdrawal category are required to visit the Student and Staff Portal at sts.ug.edu.gh/services, log in with their Student ID and PIN, and select the Withdrawal Request option.
The university indicated that in some programmes, the withdrawal process would be initiated directly by the relevant school or department rather than by individual students.
Students uncertain about their academic standing or the procedure have been encouraged to contact their respective College Academic Offices for clarification.
Counselling services available
The university has also assured affected students that support services will remain available through its Careers and Counselling Directorate.
The Directorate is expected to provide guidance to students who may require assistance in understanding their academic situation and considering their next steps.
The directive forms part of the university's enforcement of its academic progression requirements for undergraduate students following the completion of the 2025/2026 academic year.
