The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako — popularly known as Chairman Wontumi — has been hospitalised following his arrest and prolonged interrogation by state security officials.
According to his legal representative and Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah-Kubi, Wontumi became unwell during questioning and was subsequently transferred to a medical facility for treatment.
The arrest, which NPP officials have condemned as an act of political intimidation, has stirred considerable controversy. Party insiders claim that Wontumi was cooperating with an earlier police invitation when heavily armed, masked officers unexpectedly took him into custody for further investigation.
Though specific details regarding the allegations remain under wraps, Appiah-Kubi disclosed that the police had presented accusations to which his client had already responded before his health deteriorated.
Adding to the legal turmoil, Wontumi was also served a writ of summons from Exim Bank earlier in the day — a development his lawyer described as entirely separate from the criminal investigation.
He was quick to draw a clear line between the two fronts: “The ongoing criminal inquiry is one matter. The writ from Exim Bank is another. We are addressing both with the seriousness they deserve.”
As legal proceedings continue and Wontumi remains under medical observation, the NPP has vowed not to be intimidated.
The party is expected to issue further updates on Wontumi’s condition and the legal implications of the unfolding case.
