Two men accused of trying to break into the home of an Appeal Court judge in Kumasi have been arrested after a police bodyguard on duty at the residence opened fire during a struggle, the Ashanti Regional Police Command says.

The suspects, Patrick Alor (23) and Akwasi Gyamfi (21), sustained gunshot injuries and are receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) under police guard.

In a statement issued in Kumasi and signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, police said the incident happened at about 11:30pm on 3 March 2026, when the two allegedly climbed the perimeter wall of the judge’s residence armed with cutlasses and a pair of scissors.

Police said the suspects then attempted to force open the judge’s private vehicle but were spotted by the officer providing protection at the house.

According to the statement, the men resisted arrest and tried to disarm the bodyguard. The officer then discharged his weapon in what police described as self-defence and in line with operational procedures, hitting the suspects in their legs.

Police said the injured men were taken to hospital immediately and remain on admission.

The Ashanti Regional Command praised the officer’s quick response, saying it prevented a potentially serious incident, and urged the public to report suspicious activity as police continue efforts to protect the judiciary and the wider public.
