The Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has announced plans to introduce a new legislative proposal aimed at combating misinformation and disinformation in Ghana.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, April 9, the minister stated that the bill, once submitted and deliberated upon by Parliament, is expected to be enacted into law. The legislation is intended to provide a solid legal foundation to guide law enforcement in addressing the spread of false information.

Mr. George, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, issued a strong warning to individuals who engage in spreading false information. He emphasized that offenders will face consequences once the law comes into effect.

“Let this be a warning — when the law is passed, anyone found guilty of spreading falsehoods will face legal action,” he warned.

He called on all citizens to exercise responsibility in their communications and emphasized that addressing misinformation requires a united front. “We all have a civic responsibility to be cautious and truthful in what we share,” he added.

According to him, the upcoming legislation is part of an effort to promote transparency and accountability in public discourse.
