Ghana has recorded a sharp rise in cybercrime activities this year, with financial losses exceeding GH¢19 million within the first nine months of 2025. The disclosure was made by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) during an international technology conference in Accra on Monday.
Addressing participants at the International Conference on Information Systems and Emerging Technologies, the Head of Cyber Security Technology Standards at the CSA, Jake France, noted that Ghana’s growing digital footprint has been met with a corresponding escalation in online threats.
He explained that online fraud alone increased significantly, with 305 cases recorded between January and March 2025, compared to 194 cases within the same period last year. The resulting financial loss rose from GH¢2.4 million in early 2024 to GH¢4.4 million this year.
Mr. France also drew attention to a worrying rise in online blackmail and sexual extortion. Within the first four months of 2025, the CSA documented 155 such incidents, resulting in nearly GH¢500,000 in losses — almost five times the figure captured during the same period in 2024.
He stressed that although emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, blockchain, and robotic systems are reshaping industries and enabling innovation, they also increase exposure to cyber vulnerabilities. According to him, building a digitally resilient economy requires both secure adoption and ethical governance of technology systems.
