The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 32-year-old man, identified as Akoto Nelson, for allegedly impersonating a police officer during a public musical concert held at the Black Star Square in Accra.

The suspect was apprehended by officers from the National Operations Directorate (NOD) Surveillance Unit on Sunday, October 19, 2025, after he was seen wearing a police uniform bearing the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and exhibiting suspicious behavior.

According to a police statement, Nelson confessed during interrogation that he was not a police officer. He allegedly impersonated an ASP to gain free access to the event, claiming he did not have the funds to pay the gate fee.

He also disclosed that he obtained the uniform and accessories in 2022 from a deceased Chief Inspector identified as Gyasi.

A search conducted at his residence in Taifa-Ashaiman led to the recovery of multiple items believed to be part of his impersonation scheme. Exhibits retrieved include:

A toy P99 pistol

Pepper spray and pouch

Two ZTE mini mobile phones and a charger

A Xinfa cutter knife

Several complimentary cards

A voter ID in the name of Akoto Nelson Elikem

A birth certificate in the name of Nelson Akoto

Police investigations further established that the suspect works as a security guard and messenger at a private firm.

He is currently in police custody and will be charged and put before court.
