Five men have been jailed at Guildford Crown Court for their roles in a romance fraud and money laundering operation that stole more than £2 million from victims across the UK and abroad.

Between 2017 and 2024, the men exploited at least 40 confirmed victims, with prosecutors suspecting the real number was closer to 99, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Sentences Handed Down

Kwabena Edusei, 37 – 7 years, 10 months

Michael Quartey, 28 – 5 years, 6 months

Fawaz Ali, 27 – 4 years, 10 months

Ebenezer Tackie, 42 – 4 years, 6 months

George Melseaux, 40 – 3 years, 9 months

How the Fraud Worked

The gang targeted individuals through online dating platforms, using flirtatious language and grooming tactics to manipulate victims into believing they were in genuine relationships.

Victims were persuaded to hand over money under false pretences – including covering “urgent” travel costs or fake fines in remote locations. Funds were laundered through UK bank accounts, while some victims even sent cash in the post.
