A high-level delegation from the Ghana Prisons Service has met with the acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, to explore stronger collaboration and address long-standing operational challenges within the justice system.
The visit focused on key issues such as delays in processing remand cases and the enhancement of Electronic Case Management systems to better track inmate statuses. The meeting brought together members of the Prisons Directorate, led by Director General Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, alongside judges from the Supreme, Appeal, and High Courts.
Director General Baffoe-Bonnie shared updates on ongoing reforms across prison facilities and proposed the creation of a joint Parole Board involving the Judiciary, Police, and Prison Service. She also raised concerns about pre-sentencing pregnancy tests conducted on female inmates and pushed for closer institutional alignment through joint training initiatives.
“The collaboration between the Judiciary and the Prisons Service is vital to ensuring justice is not only served but seen to be served,” she noted.
In response, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie praised her leadership and echoed the need for stronger inter-agency cooperation. He suggested establishing a Prisons Service Council in each district, with regular visits from judicial officers to address prisoner grievances directly.
He reaffirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to meaningful partnerships aimed at improving justice delivery and driving reforms across the criminal justice sector.
