Nearly three years after the tragic death of Ishmael Abdallah, the court reached its verdict, leaving Ghanaians reeling from the crime's disturbing nature and the fact that it was perpetrated by minors.

The High Court has convicted two teenagers for the horrific murder of a 10-year-old boy in Kasoa, a crime that shocked the nation when it occurred in 2021.

Nearly three years after the tragic death of Ishmael Abdallah, the court reached its verdict, leaving Ghanaians reeling from the crime's disturbing nature and the fact that it was perpetrated by minors.

Nicholas Kini, who was 18 at the time of the incident, received a life sentence for his involvement in the murder. The other teenager, who was 15 when the crime was committed, will face sentencing in a juvenile court since the High Court does not have the authority to sentence minors.

The murder was driven by a misguided attempt to gain wealth through ritualistic means.

During the investigation, the younger teenager confessed that he had been influenced by a video from a spiritualist who promised riches in exchange for GH¢5,000 and human blood. The teenager admitted to enlisting Nicholas Kini to help him carry out the plan, which ultimately led to the killing of Ishmael.

The two lured the boy to an unfinished building under the guise of playing a video game. Once there, they attacked him, striking him with a stick and then fatally injuring him with cement blocks.

A pathologist later confirmed that Ishmael died from asphyxiation after being buried alive.

Throughout the trial, seven witnesses were called by the prosecution, including the father of the victim, police officers, and relatives of the accused. Testimonies painted a grim picture of the crime, with the father of the first accused admitting that his son had confessed to the murder, implicating Nicholas Kini.

The victim's father provided heart-wrenching testimony, describing the moment he discovered his son's body. Additionally, the first accused's sister testified that she had seen both her brother and Nicholas Kini at the scene of the crime on the day it occurred. Her observations eventually led to the discovery of Ishmael's body and the confessions of the two teenagers.

Although the first accused admitted to conspiracy but denied committing the murder, Nicholas Kini maintained his innocence throughout the trial, claiming he had been framed. He argued that he was not present at the crime scene and provided an alibi, saying he had been with his grandfather. However, this alibi could not be substantiated with evidence.

After careful deliberation, the seven-member jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict, convicting both teenagers of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

In her closing remarks, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo urged the jury to consider the nation’s conscience in their decision. The sentencing brings an end to a case that has left an indelible mark on the country, offering a measure of closure to the grieving family.
