The Ghana Police Service says it has broken the back of a criminal network blamed for a spate of armed robberies targeting rural banks in parts of the country.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno disclosed the development at a media briefing held at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, September 24, 2024.
Describing the outcome as a “major breakthrough,” the IGP explained that a series of investigations and surveillance operations revealed a highly organised syndicate operating across multiple regions.
“This morning, we are delighted to share with you a major breakthrough the Service has made in our fight against violent crimes, specifically armed robbery,” Dr. Yohuno said. “After analysing data and conducting surveillance in collaboration with credible informants, we were able to track down the syndicate.”
The coordinated police swoop extended through Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti regions, covering communities such as Esereso Adagya, Ejisu Achiaakrom, Atonsu-Kyirapatre, Ahwia-Zongo, Aputuogya-Abuontem, Kaase-BOST, Asuofua, Atonsu-Monaco, Pakyi, Obuasi, and Buoho near Kronum.
According to the IGP, ten suspected members of the gang were apprehended while three others lost their lives in an exchange of gunfire with officers. The Police have launched a search for others who managed to flee the operation.
“We will not stop until we get them arrested,” he stressed.
Items seized during the raid included 14 assorted firearms among them AK-47 rifles, pump-action shotguns, pistols, and a single-barrel gun alongside quantities of ammunition, vehicles, and mobile phones.
Dr. Yohuno singled out the Ashanti Regional Police Commander and his intelligence team for their role in the success, while also thanking members of the public whose tips guided officers.
“I wish to sincerely thank members of the public who volunteered credible information to the police that contributed to this breakthrough,” he said. “The Service is committed to rewarding credible information that supports our investigations.”
He ended with a firm warning to criminal elements across the country: “We will continue to make life uncomfortable for criminal elements in our society. We will continue to pursue you till you are brought to justice.
