The Ghana Police Service has commenced an investigation into violent incidents during the climax of the annual Homowo Festival at Anyaa and Sowutuom on Saturday, 30th August 2025.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the disturbances erupted when a misunderstanding ensued between followers of two rival chiefs during the sprinkling of the traditional food, Kpokpoi. The disagreement quickly escalated into gunfire, sparking panic and chaos among festival-goers.
The violence spread to nearby Olebu when some attendees attempted to flee the grounds. Police confirmed that three men—Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu; Theophilus Nii Anuu Kwadjan; and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo—lost their lives in the confrontation.
Four others sustained gunshot wounds. They include Enoch Droeavor, who has since been treated and discharged, while Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, also known as Nii Oforfour, remain under medical care at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for autopsy. Meanwhile, the police have intensified patrols across the affected communities and launched intelligence-led operations to track down the perpetrators.
The Regional Command has strongly cautioned traditional leaders, elders, and their supporters to strictly adhere to agreed security arrangements during such festivities to prevent further violence.
