Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine has confirmed that the long-awaited criminal trial over the controversial Accra Sky Train project will commence before the legal year goes on break at the end of July 2025.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 28, Dr. Ayine provided an update on several high-profile cases, with particular focus on the stalled Sky Train prosecution.
“In the Sky Train trial, we have concluded the case management conference,” Dr. Ayine revealed. He noted that the trial, initially delayed due to a change in legal representation and multiple medical excuses, will nonetheless begin before the court recesses on July 31.
According to the Attorney-General, progress has been hampered by recurring health-related absences from the second accused, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, as well as a recent medical excuse submitted by the lawyer for the first accused, Mr. Solomon Asamoah.
Despite these procedural setbacks, he was firm in his assurance that the trial would commence as scheduled.
The case stems from the failed Accra Sky Train project, launched in 2018 as a public-private partnership aimed at transforming urban transportation in the capital.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Railways Development, Africa Investor Holdings, and the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF). However, investigations later revealed that a $2 million disbursement by GIIF was made without proper authorization or due diligence.
Mr. Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi were formally charged in May 2025 with multiple offenses, including
Willfully causing financial loss to the state
Conspiracy to commit a crime involving the dissipation of public funds
Intentional dissipation of public funds, in violation of the Public Property Protection Decree
The charges were filed at the Accra High Court (Criminal Division) on May 13, 2025.
Dr. Ayine reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability in cases involving public funds.
